Within easy reach of Rome and with miles of the Adriatic’s white sandy beaches and beautiful azure sea, you might think it was a perfect location. Add to that close to 400kms of first class skiing as good as anywhere in Europe, the ski world cup has visited Roccaraso, and things get even better. Many ancient and historic properties in Italy have been handed down through the centuries, some with the most fascinating history, such as this one. This particular Palazzo, although a Historic Monument had been allowed to fall into a very poor state when it was vacated following the Mussolini years. Used as a “summer retreat” by the local Marquis whose main residence was in a nearby village, the Palazzo formed most of the main street of the small town of Introdacqua. Although the villagers and Mayor, in particular, wished to see it restored, it took many years before the roof was re-built and some other external repairs could be carried out allowing us to carry out an extensive restoration. Situated in Introdacqua, listed as one of the most beautiful towns in the region, is the 15th century Palazzo di Marquis Trasmondi. Only 5 kms from Sulmona, city of art and love home of the poet Ovid. An imposing building at the heart of the village, the palazzo is an historic monument and features in much of the tourist information for the area. With Rome only one and a half hours away, it is easy to make a day trip to this timeless, historic capital city. The nearest of 130km’s of white sandy beaches on the Adriatic coast is reached in 40 minutes and the nearby ski resort of Roccaraso, recently host to the ski world cup, is just 20 minutes away. With extensive skiing to suit all abilities, this area is comparable to many of the much better known and consequently, much busier resorts in the Alps and Dolomites to the north. The area abounds with natural beauty due to the vast areas of National Park with brown bears, osprey, ibex, wild boar and wolves all a part of the natural habitat.
